Discover the Golfe du Morbihan

The Golfe du Morbihan is made up of some 40 islands and islets in the heart of a 5 km stretch of sea. It links up with the Atlantic Ocean at Port-Navalo and Locmariaquer. You can explore this remarkable territory at any time of year on board a cruise that takes in the Bay of Mon Braz, the architectural heritage of Vannes, the Rhuys peninsula and the Landes de Lanvaux.

The most beautiful islands in the Gulf of Morbihan

The largest of the Gulf islands isIle aux Moines (7 km). Then there’s lushÎle d’Arz. Then there’s the island of Gavrinis, home to a Neolithic monument, and the Berder peninsula, accessible only at low tide.

You can take a cruise that covers the entire gulf, or simply stop off at the island of your choice. Find out about the many departure times from Vannes, Port-Navalo or Arradon. A wide choice of activities is on offer: kayaking, sailing, swimming and fishing.

Gulf of Morbihan Regional Nature Park

The exceptional flora and fauna that evolve in the Gulf of Morbihan led to the creation of the Gulf of Morbihan Regional Nature Park in 2014. It’s a prime area for migratory birds. Oyster-farming professionals also find it an advantageous terrain in which to carry out their activity.

This natural area covers a remarkable 81,200 km². It includes 17,000 hectares of maritime zones. The coastline extends over 568 km. The area bears the Valeurs Parc Naturel Régional label.

Several communes work closely together to protect this park (Saint-Philibert, Auray, Sainte-Anne d’Auray…). You can opt for a guided tour, during which you’ll have the opportunity to sample local produce. Take advantage of your stay to discover the Brière Regional Nature Park!

The Rhuys peninsula

You can discover the Rhuys peninsula from Quiberon Bay by heading for Vannes. This area is full of treasures. Sarzeau is home to the Château de Suscinio. This medieval fortress is located in a privileged natural setting.

You can also stop off at the Cairn du Petit Mont. This megalithic site dates back to the 5th millennium BC. Continue on to the port of Crouesty, Brittany’s largest marina. And let’s not forget the sublime panorama offered by Port-Navalo.

Visit Vannes

This town, which will take you back to the Middle Ages, is famous for its historic center. In fact, you’ll be impressed by the many medieval-style buildings. In the capital of Morbihan, you’ll be in awe of the majestic Saint-Pierre cathedral, the historic ramparts and the Saint-Patern district, with its many half-timbered houses.

Take the tour of Vannes’ fortifications, starting at the Porte Saint-Vincent and continuing to the Porte-Prison. You’ll be charmed by the magnificent formal gardens.

A stroll through Vannes is also synonymous with a day of shopping: fashion, home decoration, crafts… The Vannes marina invites you to stroll along the channel to explore the city’s quays. Take a seat on the terrace of a café to enjoy the magnificent harbour scenery.

Walks and hikes in the Gulf of Morbihan

The Gulf of Morbihan offers many options, such as the famous “sentier des douaniers”.Venturing out on the GR34 gives you the chance to explore the whole of the Gulf, covering 180 km. There are 16 sections ranging from 8 to 20 km, most of which run along the coastline.

There are no fewer than 46 hiking trails to discover Vannes, the Rhuys peninsula, Ile aux Moines and Ile d’Arz. You can also explore the area by bike. The scenery is sublime along the cycle paths and trails that run alongside the sea. There are also ferry boats to help you move between two shores.
